HAMILTON, Scotland > PA > OH -- Looking for
connections to this family
------------------------------------
Family lore says our first Hamilton in the US was Robert
Hamilton b.
about 1761 in Scotland (BUT his son Milton says in the 1880 census that
both his
parents were born in PA, so we don't know if there is a generation
missing?). Robert m. Lilia Maria Polk.
He was in the US by 1813 in Beaver Co. PA, went to
Meigs Co. Ohio in the 1850s. He was a school teacher, as was his
son,
Milton Josiah Hamilton, b. 1816 who m. Sophia Lyons.
She was born in PA as
were both her parents (1880 census).
Milton's children were Joseph Boyd
Hamilton, Octavia (I have a bio on this man from Progressive Men of
Wyoming), Mary,
Milton, Curtis, Howard,
Cora. There may have been an Anne.
Joseph Boyd Hamilton's children were Thena, Sarah,
Estelle, Cora and
Abner.
We know there were
Boyds in the family, but we're not sure how they are connected.
Our Hamiltons spent most of their lives in Ohio (Middleport and
Meigs Co).

| 9/10/00 | HAMILTON, Archibald born in Scotland, was an early New York pioneer "when there were only two log
cabins on Broadway; New york City". His daughter Margaret Hamilton was born 1816 in Scotland, and
it is said she was about 15 years old when she came to this country, to " help in a sisters laundry
ironing the ruffles of the soldiers shirts". This is from an old newspaper article. Margaret
married a James Duncan, and ended up in Minnesota, and that line I can share a lot. There are so
many Archibald Hamiltons, that I have almost given up. Thanks to anyone who can fit my line with
yours.

Background Information
Many of the Scots taken prisoner by Cromwell at the Battle of Dunbar in 1650 were "exiled to the plantations". I am looking for a record of those prisoners, under what
conditions they were sent to America and the location of their exile. I am
particularly interested to know if a John Hambleton, who appears in James City
County, Virginia, in 1651, was one of those prisoners - also a James
Hamilton who appears in James City County, Viriginia, in 1655.
If you have any information on these prisoners, John Hambleton or James
Hamilton, please respond to: owhmltn@infi.net. |
